Fonterra CEO Miles Hurrell Resigns After Steering Strategic Reset

Fonterra Co-operative Group, a leading dairy company in New Zealand, has announced the resignation of its Chief Executive Officer, Miles Hurrell. This announcement was made on Monday, as reported by Reuters. Hurrell has been with Fonterra for 25 years and was appointed CEO in 2018. He will continue to serve in his position for a six-month notice period, during which the company will search for his successor.

Under Hurrell's leadership, Fonterra underwent a significant strategic reset, concentrating on its strengths in New Zealand's pasture-based milk production and focusing on sustainability and higher-value dairy ingredients. His prior roles included senior positions such as Chief Operating Officer of Farm Source and General Manager for the Middle East, Africa, Russia, and Eastern Europe.

In October last year, Fonterra announced that its farmer shareholders had agreed to divest its global consumer and associated businesses to the French dairy group Lactalis. This move is part of the broader strategic vision that Hurrell has been implementing, which Jeremy Sullivan of Hamilton Hindin Greene noted has left the cooperative in a stronger position than when Hurrell first took over.

The Fonterra board is actively looking for a new CEO and expects to make an appointment in the coming months. Sullivan emphasized that the focus for the new leader will be on executing existing plans rather than devising new strategies.
