In a strategic move to bolster sustainable food production, global dairy cooperative Fonterra has entered into a collaboration with Superbrewed Food, a leading manufacturer of natural ingredients.

This partnership aims to advance the development of nutrient-rich biomass proteins by leveraging the strengths of both organizations: Superbrewed’s innovative biomass protein platform and Fonterra’s extensive expertise in dairy processing, ingredients, and applications.

The collaboration centers on the development of functional biomass proteins that meet the growing global demand for sustainable and high-quality protein sources. This initiative is a direct response to the increasing consumer demand for nutrient-dense, non-GMO, and allergen-free protein solutions. It builds on Superbrewed’s recent commercial launch of their patented Postbiotic Cultured Protein, a bacteria biomass protein that has recently gained FDA approval for the U.S. market.

Fonterra's evaluation of Postbiotic Cultured Protein revealed its excellent functional and nutritional qualities, which complement traditional dairy ingredients in food applications. Recognizing the potential of this synergy, the two companies have embarked on a multi-year collaboration to develop new biomass protein solutions. A key focus of this joint effort is the utilization of Fonterra's lactose permeate—a byproduct of dairy processing—as a feedstock for fermentation. Superbrewed's technology will be employed to convert this lactose into high-quality, sustainable protein, adding significant value to Fonterra's dairy operations.
