First Milk Expands Farmer Representation with New Director Appointment

First Milk, a notable entity in Cumbria’s dairy sector, has confirmed the appointment of Robert Craig as an additional farmer director. This decision was made after the Board and Member Council decided to increase the number of farmer directors from two to three. Craig, who manages a multi-site business with 1,500 cows across three farms in Cumbria and Northumberland, was selected following a nominations process initiated in February. The interviews were overseen by the Board Nominations Committee, which included a non-executive director, farmer directors, Council members, and the Chairman.

Craig's appointment reflects the growth of the cooperative and is intended to ensure appropriate farmer representation in First Milk’s governance. The nomination process attracted significant interest, with four farmer member candidates interviewed for the role. Craig's selection will be formally ratified at the AGM later this year. Known for his extensive experience, Craig has previously served as a vice-chairman of First Milk and held positions such as chairman of Cumbria NFU and chair of the Royal Association of British Dairy Farmers.

The decision to appoint Craig comes at a critical time as First Milk prepares to appoint a new CEO to replace Shelagh Hancock, who is set to retire. Craig will join existing farmer directors Mike Smith, whose term has been extended for continuity, and Scott Calderwood.
