Fire Ant Invasion Threatens Australian Dairy Farms
Australian dairy farmers are grappling with the looming threat of red imported fire ants (RIFA) due to imported fodder amid worsening drought conditions. Biosecurity officials have issued warnings and implemented strict certification requirements to combat this risk. The ants, although not currently present in Victoria, pose a severe risk to the state’s economy, agriculture, and well-being. Hay and straw, commonly used as fodder, are ideal hosts for these invasive ants, making imported feed a major biosecurity concern. To mitigate this threat, fodder from RIFA-free areas must have a freedom certificate, and products from infested zones require specific inspections and certified treatments by state agricultural officers.

This creates additional complexities in dairy economics, especially for Victorian dairy farmers heavily reliant on external feed due to the drought. Stricter documentation is essential, with four certificates outlined: Plant Health Certificate (PHC), Plant Health Assurance Certificate (PHAC), Biosecure HACCP Biosecurity Certificate (BHBC), or Plant Health Declaration (PHD). A RIFA incursion could be devastating, with potential damage to crops, livestock, and agricultural operations, as well as risks to people and wildlife. This situation highlights critical biosecurity concerns worldwide, emphasizing the importance of robust protocols to avoid such biosecurity breaches in interconnected supply chains.
