Federal Program Boosts Dairy Production in Tabasco with Fixed Prices
The federal program Leche para el Bienestar has launched an initiative targeting small dairy producers in Tabasco, Mexico, with the aim of expanding its local supply network. The program offers a guaranteed purchase price of 11.50 pesos per liter of raw milk and provides credits of up to 500,000 pesos to eliminate intermediaries in the southeastern region. Currently, the program operates with 16 registered farmers who exclusively supply the Macuspana Collection Center.
Marcos de la Cruz Sánchez, the regional head of the program, emphasized that the registration for the supplier list is free and seeks to incorporate production units from various municipalities to strengthen food sovereignty. The strategy includes financial and commercial incentives to ensure a steady flow of raw materials into the social supply chain.
Under the regulatory framework of the so-called Plan Campeche, integrated producers can access preferential credit lines through Caja Popular Mexicana. These funds are intended for the purchase of livestock and the expansion of herds. The recent restructuring of operational rules prohibits the participation of commercial intermediaries, ensuring that economic benefits directly impact the primary production level. This policy increases profit margins for farmers but also shifts the logistical challenges of transportation and maintaining the cold chain to the producers themselves.
To address geographic bottlenecks that limit daily milk collection in remote areas, federal authorities are negotiating with the Huimanguillo Municipality to open a new strategic collection center. This public investment project aims to significantly reduce travel distances for surrounding dairy basins, facilitating the transition to formal market operations for small farmers who currently lack efficient distribution options.
On the commercial end, Leche para el Bienestar distributes approximately 22,000 liters of pasteurized fluid milk monthly in the Tabasco market, using various packaging formats. The final product is backed by quality assurance from the Federal Consumer Protection Agency (Profeco), which has rated it as one of the top nutritional options available. This balance between regulated public purchases and efficient social distribution seeks to establish a sustainable business model for the dairy sector in the humid tropics.
