Family-Run Dairy Farm Hosts Net Zero Workshop to Showcase Sustainability Efforts

A family-run dairy farm, Sychpant Farm in Cardigan, is making headlines for its significant strides in reducing its carbon footprint. The farm is set to host a "Net Zero Workshop" on February 20, in collaboration with Farming Connect, to share its experiences and engage in wider discussions on reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

The farm, managed by farmers Marc and Lucy Allison, has implemented a variety of strategies to reduce carbon emissions. These include prioritizing herd health, improving feed efficiency, and reducing the age at first calving for heifers.

The workshop promises to be a comprehensive event, with contributions from renowned experts in the field. Professor Prysor Williams from Bangor University will talk about farm carbon footprinting and provide insights into current research in the area. Hefin Richards of Rumenation Nutrition Consultancy will discuss topics related to the dairy herd’s health, fertility, and diet.

In addition, Kirsty Tamilia from CCF will cover youngstock management, while a representative from First Milk will discuss their involvement in conducting annual carbon footprint assessments at Sychpant Farm.

Dr. Non Williams, Farming Connect's carbon specialist officer, has emphasized the importance of the farm's advancements and their impact on reducing its carbon footprint. Dr. Williams remarked, "Sychpant Farm is a great example of what can be achieved by making small improvements on the farm. This practical, on-farm workshop will demonstrate how minor changes have improved the farm business and helped work towards net zero emissions."

Interested participants can attend the event by visiting the Farming Connect website or calling 03456 000 813.
