The European Commission has given the green light for the importation of two new genetically modified (GM) maize crops and has renewed the authorization for an existing GM maize variety for use in food and animal feed.
EU Commission Approves Import of Genetically Modified Maize Varieties for Food and Feed
This decision, announced on July 2, underscores the Commission’s commitment to ensuring a high level of safety in human and animal health as well as environmental protection within the European Union.

These genetically modified maize varieties, which are prohibited from being cultivated within the EU, have undergone rigorous evaluation by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA). The EFSA’s positive scientific assessment confirms that these GM maize varieties are as safe as their non-GM counterparts.

The approved authorizations will last for 10 years, and any food or feed products derived from these GM crops will be subject to the EU’s stringent labelling and traceability regulations. This decision came after the Commission was legally compelled to act following the inability of Member States to reach a consensus either in support of or against these authorizations during discussions in both the Standing Committee and the Appeal Committee.
