Essex Dairy Farm Under Investigation for Animal Cruelty

Undercover footage from Albyns Farm, operated by Curtismill Holsteins in Stapleford Tawney, Essex, has led to the dismissal of several workers after they were caught on video abusing cows. The footage was recorded over two periods, in 2024 and 2026, and reveals workers punching, kicking, and using towels to whip cows across their faces, ribs, and udders. In one instance in 2024, a cigarette was seen being pushed into a cow's face.

Curtismill Holsteins has condemned these actions, emphasizing that animal welfare is their top priority. They have initiated an independent investigation and improved surveillance by installing additional CCTV cameras. The farm is also increasing staff training to prevent future incidents.

The farm, which houses approximately 700 cows year-round, supplies milk to major companies Tesco and Muller. Both companies have temporarily suspended their relationship with the farm pending the results of the ongoing investigations.

The allegations of animal cruelty were brought to light by animal activist and filmmaker Joey Carbstrong, whose 18-month investigation captured over an hour of footage. Carbstrong's footage shows workers using sharp instruments to prod cows and engaging in practices such as tail-twisting to cause pain and force movement.

The Crown Estate, owner of the land leased to Curtismill Holsteins, has stated that they do not condone any form of violence or abuse towards animals.
