DFA Farms Secures $22.8 Million USDA Grant to Pioneer Methane Emission Reduction in Dairy

This grant, part of the 81 announced on November 1, 2023, through the USDA RCPP, totals over $1 billion, emphasizing the commitment to advancing conservation efforts and climate-smart agriculture through collaborative solutions in the agricultural sector.
DFA's project will focus on collaborating with farmer-owners in California, Idaho, and Utah to integrate an enhanced feed additive into feed rations, thereby reducing enteric methane emissions on dairy farms. Beyond emission reduction, the initiative establishes a pathway for farmer-owners to be compensated through participation in the carbon marketplace, acknowledging the environmental benefits they generate.
Gary Stueve, Chief Operating Officer of DFA's Western Area, expressed enthusiasm about the grant, stating, "We're thrilled to receive a Regional Conservation Partnership Program grant from USDA and help foster the accelerated adoption of these innovative agricultural practices on our owner farms in the western U.S." Stueve emphasized the role of dairy in addressing climate concerns and highlighted the financial value and credit that farmer-owners will receive for their efforts.
Shawn Osborne, Chief Operating Officer of DFA's Mountain Area, commended the development of new tools and systems to accurately measure progress, ensuring that farmers are duly compensated for their sustainability efforts. Osborne highlighted the longstanding commitment of DFA's farmers to reduce their carbon footprint and emphasized DFA's leadership in securing recognition and credit for farmers' environmental contributions.
The RCPP grant underscores DFA's dedication to advancing sustainable practices within the dairy industry and signifies a strategic step toward recognizing and rewarding farmers for their vital role in addressing climate challenges.
