Decline in Dairy Consumption in Ecuador Linked to Misinformation
The per capita consumption of dairy products in Ecuador has decreased to 101.2 liters annually as of 2025. This figure falls well short of the 150 liters per year recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) for a balanced diet.
Industry experts and producers in Ecuador have pointed to several factors contributing to this decline. One major issue is the spread of misinformation, which has led to misconceptions about the health benefits of dairy products. Additionally, there has been an increase in self-diagnosed conditions such as lactose intolerance, which may not be medically verified but influence consumer choices.
The dairy industry in Ecuador is also facing stiff competition from ultra-processed products, which often serve as substitutes for traditional dairy items. These products are typically marketed as healthier or more convenient alternatives, attracting consumers away from conventional dairy consumption.
Efforts to counteract this trend involve educational campaigns aimed at correcting misinformation and promoting the nutritional advantages of dairy products. However, the challenge remains significant given the pervasive nature of the misinformation and the strong market presence of ultra-processed alternatives.
