Danone’s Decision Threatens a Regional Dairy Supply Chain
Danone has reportedly stopped collecting milk directly from farms in a specific regional milk shed. The multinational food company has also instructed third-party private processors and co-operative suppliers connected to its deliveries not to include skimmed milk from that area.
The reported instruction extends beyond Danone’s own purchasing operations. By limiting the use of the region’s skimmed milk by other processors and suppliers in its network, it reduces the number of commercial channels available to local producers. Farmers affected by the measure therefore face narrower options for marketing their milk.
The FNPL union said the withdrawal from procurement threatens established regional skills in the processing of butter and cream. It identified artisanal expertise in those products as being at risk as the purchasing arrangements change.
The union also linked the change to the position of peri-urban agriculture. It described that form of farming as important to rural employment, the preservation of varied farmland and direct relationships between producers and consumers. The statement did not specify the number of farms or the volume of milk involved.
Operational consequences could extend to services supporting dairy production in northern France. The interregional dairy analysis laboratory may receive fewer samples for testing and analytical checks on dairy products processed on farms.
