Danone Settles Lawsuit with NGOs Over Plastic Usage

Danone has successfully concluded a lawsuit settlement with several environmental organizations in France, amidst growing pressures over its use of plastics. In January 2023, legal proceedings were initiated by ClientEarth, Surfrider Foundation Europe, and Zero Waste France, alleging Danone's insufficient efforts to minimize its plastic usage across its operations.

The environmental groups had earlier issued warnings in 2022 to Danone and other major companies like Nestle and McDonald's concerning their lax management of plastic pollution. The public grievance culminated in a lawsuit filed at the Judicial Court of Paris, invoking the French duty of vigilance law which mandates corporate accountability for environmental impacts.

In line with the agreement finalized on February 21, Danone has pledged to enhance the transparency of its plastic usage and the associated environmental consequences. The company is committed to detailing the steps it's taking to reduce, reuse, recycle, and recover its plastic packaging materials.

Danone's collaboration with the NGOs has reportedly been "open and transparent," fostering discussions while seeking a unified approach to these challenging environmental issues. As part of the settlement, Danone will now publicize its plastic footprint and will engage in annual consultations with the NGOs, continuing until 2027.

The agreement, while a positive development, is a starting point in the long journey towards sustainable practices. Bénédicte Kjær Kahlat, one of the coalition's spokespersons, emphasized the importance of avoiding substitute single-use materials, urging manufacturers to favor reusable and reduced packaging solutions to effectively tackle plastic pollution.
