Danone is heavily investing in regenerative agriculture to mitigate climate risks and bolster supply chain resilience. The company has implemented various initiatives to support thousands of farmers globally in adopting sustainable practices.

Danone has committed significant resources to regenerative agriculture as part of its strategy to manage climate risks and secure its supply chain. This approach involves partnerships, training, and development efforts to promote sustainable farming practices among its global network of producers. Danone's initiatives focus on crucial areas such as soil health, water management, biodiversity, and farmer livelihoods, impacting thousands of smallholder farmers across multiple regions including Africa and 20 agricultural projects in 25 countries.

By 2026, Danone aims to have 91% of its milk supply evaluated using farm-level assessment tools to monitor environmental practices and facilitate the transition to regenerative agriculture. Currently, 42% of the company's key ingredients are sourced from farms engaged in these practices, with the company planning to increase this to approximately 45% by 2030. In the United States alone, Danone collaborates with over 50 producers to scale regenerative agriculture.

Jessie Copeland, senior director of regenerative agriculture at Danone US, stated that since 2017, the company has been expanding its efforts in regenerative agriculture, initially focusing on soil health research. Danone's program prioritizes protecting soils, water, and biodiversity, empowering farmers, and enhancing animal welfare.

Danone's regenerative agriculture practices include improving soil fertility and organic matter, efficient water use, and enhancing biodiversity by maintaining natural habitats. The company also focuses on reducing inputs like synthetic fertilizers, optimizing livestock diets to lower methane emissions, and using technologies such as smart soakers and cow monitoring systems to improve energy efficiency.

In collaboration with Ahold Delhaize USA and The Nature Conservancy, Danone has initiated a value chain partnership to accelerate regenerative agriculture in dairy production. This includes implementing tools like autonomous irrigation systems to reduce water usage and fertilizer runoff.

The company has also launched the Milk Academy, a global initiative aimed at upskilling producers through training and knowledge-sharing. This program is crucial in reaching smallholder farmers and demonstrating the benefits of regenerative practices.
