Danone Romania, recognized as the most efficient Danone facility in Europe, is celebrating a significant milestone—25 years of local production. Employing 100% Romanian milk sourced directly from local households and farmers, Danone not only caters to the Romanian market but also exports to 14 other European countries.
The company's journey has been marked by consistent investment, continuous innovation, and a commitment to product quality, which has significantly contributed to the economic and social growth of Romania. This celebration underscores Danone's dedication to its mission of promoting health through its product offerings.
The story of Danone in Romania began in 1996 with the acquisition and modernization of the Miorita dairy factory in Bucharest. By 1999, Danone had strengthened its market presence by introducing its first yogurts made in Bucharest—'Natural', 'Delicious', and 'Natural to Drink'. The first two are still favorites in the local market today.
Investment in Production Capabilities
Over these 25 years, Danone Romania has heavily invested in upgrading and expanding the Bucharest plant's production capabilities, making it a hub for European local production. These investments have enhanced the factory's efficiency, allowing it to produce 75,000 tons of yogurt annually. Each day, the factory produces one million yogurts using Romanian milk, under popular brands like Activia, Casa Buna, Cremosso, Danone, Danonino, Delicios, and YoPRO.
"In this span of 25 years, Danone Romania has grown alongside generations of consumers and partners, affirming its commitment to quality, innovation, and social responsibility," stated Adrian Pascu, Vice President Sales for Danone Central East Europe & General Manager Ukraine. "While diversifying our product range, we remain committed to promoting a healthy, modern lifestyle."
"The continued investments in the Bucharest factory not only showcase our commitment to quality production but also our dedication to food safety, societal well-being, and environmental stewardship," remarked Florin Barbu, Minister of Agriculture.
Diversification of Product Portfolio
Danone Romania is constantly expanding its product portfolio to include a variety of creamy, protein-rich yogurts like YoPRO, suited for athletes, and nutritious plant-based alternatives under the Alpro brand. The company also focuses on promoting digestive health through its Activia products.
Through the "A Chance for Your Family" socio-economic program, launched in 2012 in partnership with the Heifer Foundation and Polaris, Danone Romania has invested 7 million euros to support local households and encourage entrepreneurship.
In 2023, Danone Romania achieved a turnover of 1.099 billion lei, a 17.8% increase from the previous year, with a profit margin of 6%, totaling 68.4 million lei.
Danone Romania is also part of the regional B Corp certification in Central and Eastern Europe, joining a global movement committed to rigorous standards of social and environmental performance, transparency, and accountability.
