Danone Expands Protein Portfolio with Innovative Plant-Based Products

Danone is actively expanding its protein product portfolio by entering new markets and exploring different product formats. A year ago, the company introduced ambient Oikos Protein Shakes, designed to capture the rising demand for ready-to-drink protein beverages outside traditional refrigerated aisles. This product has shown steady growth in distribution and consumer penetration, supported by strong trial rates and high velocity across retail outlets.

Rafael Acevedo, President of Dairy Yogurt, Protein Shakes, and Kids Nutrition at Danone US, highlighted the strategic expansion beyond traditional yogurt consumers, leveraging the ambient shake format to reach a broader audience. This move aligns with the company's goal to position Oikos as a scalable growth platform.

Danone's Chief Research and Innovation Officer, Susan Zaripheh, emphasized the company's commitment to refining protein quality across dairy and plant-based categories. The launch of Silk Protein at the end of 2025 marked another significant step, offering the highest protein content among refrigerated plant-based milks in the US, according to Danone.

Zaripheh noted that protein remains a key nutrient for consumers, with 35% of Americans increasing their protein intake last year. The focus is shifting towards protein quality and convenience, with consumers increasingly opting for smaller, on-the-go formats. This trend is driving Danone's innovation efforts, which combine protein with other nutrients like fiber and vitamins.

In 2026, Danone expanded into meal replacements with the release of Alpro Meal To Go in Europe and the acquisition of Huel for €1.2 billion. This acquisition provides Danone with a strong presence in the fast-growing meal replacement market, enhancing its growth profile in both Europe and the US.

CFO Jurgen Essert stated that Huel's ambient product format and diverse product portfolio are strategically valuable, given the growing preference for out-of-home consumption. Danone aims to maximize this opportunity by leveraging Huel's strong market position and gross margins.
