Dairy Farmers in Ceará Shift to Beef Production

In the central region of Ceará, dairy farmers are re-evaluating their business models, opting to switch from dairy to beef cattle operations. This shift is largely motivated by the higher returns associated with beef production compared to dairy farming, which involves significant labor and operational costs.

Airton Carneiro, a prominent dairy farmer in Ceará, has announced his decision to transition to beef cattle farming. He operates two farms in the semi-arid region: Itaguaçu, which spans 1,500 hectares in Quixadá, and Descanso, covering 700 hectares in Quixeramobim. Carneiro's strategy involves planting pastures specifically for Nelore cattle, which are recognized for their suitability for beef production. His plan includes purchasing young Nelore calves, raising them to reach 30 arrobas, and then transferring them to confinement for fattening.

This trend is not limited to Carneiro. Many small-scale farmers in the Cariri region are also embracing beef cattle farming, particularly focusing on Nelore and Sindi breeds. In Brejo Santo, a medium-sized farmer, who chooses to remain anonymous, has successfully adopted this model by purchasing Nelore calves, fattening them in confinement, and selling them to Masterboi, a company operating a meat processing plant in Canhotinho, Pernambuco.

The catalyst for this transition is the announcement of a new Masterboi slaughterhouse in Iguatu, which is expected to process 1,000 cattle daily. This development is anticipated to significantly impact the livestock sector in Ceará, prompting a quicker than expected shift towards beef production.

Dairy producers across Ceará acknowledge that the new slaughterhouse will potentially alter the state's livestock landscape. The prospect of more predictable returns and lower operational costs with beef production is compelling dairy farmers, including seasoned ones like Carneiro, to redirect their resources and workforce towards beef cattle farming.
