Dairy Farmers Fear Peak Payouts as Margins Tighten
Dairy farmers are becoming more concerned about the year ahead, according to the latest confidence survey by Federated Farmers. Their outlook was less confident than that of farmers in the sheep and beef sector, the survey found.
The findings come as profitability in the dairy sector reaches its highest level in a decade. Despite that improvement, farmers are questioning whether current conditions can continue while operating costs rise.
Input costs were identified as a particular concern, with fuel prices continuing to increase. Higher costs could narrow the benefit of strong profitability and affect farmers’ assessment of the coming year.
Federated Farmers said the concerns were relevant to wider expectations for the economy. The survey’s findings potentially place hopes for an economic recovery in 2027 under pressure, although it did not establish that a recovery would fail to materialise.
The survey compared sentiment among dairy farmers with that of those working in sheep and beef. It highlighted growing anxiety among dairy producers even as the sector reports its strongest profitability in ten years and farmers remain focused on whether favourable conditions will hold.
