Dairy Farmers Adopt New Strategies for Calf Rearing
Dairy Farmers Embrace Change in Calf Breeding
Dairy farmers across the United Kingdom have enacted transformative breeding strategies, reducing the number of pure-bred dairy bull calves significantly, as reported by the GB Dairy Calf Strategy. Launched in 2020 by AHDB and the NFU, this strategy promotes humane rearing of calves within dairy or beef supply chains, successfully eliminating routine euthanasia.
Strategic Initiatives and Industry Support
At the core of this initiative is responsible breeding, with increased use of sexed semen now accounting for 84% of all sales, alongside a surge in beef semen usage on dairy farms. The updated Red Tractor requirements now demand written breeding and management policies from all members.
Positive Trends and Biosecurity
Impressive figures demonstrate a 65% reduction in pure-bred dairy bull calves and a 77% increase in beef cross dairy calves over the past decade. The strategy further advances biosecurity, offering additional market routes for TB-affected herds, and simplifying movement protocols.
Future Focus and Market Opportunities
Looking ahead to 2028, the strategy aims to foster improved relationships within the beef supply chain, leveraging data and technology. The 'Buy British' campaign will emphasize how dairy beef can meet market demands, reducing reliance on imports. Currently, imported beef constitutes about a third of Britain's consumption.
Gwyn Jones, chair of Ruminant Health and Welfare, highlighted the environmental and market benefits of rearing dairy beef. The strategy assures consumers of the quality and origin of British dairy and beef products, underpinning sustainability efforts.
