Dairy Giant Gokul’s New Flavor: Ice Cream and Cheese

A significant shift is underway in the Indian dairy industry as the Kolhapur District Milk Producers Cooperative Federation, known as Gokul, prepares to expand its product line. The cooperative is set to begin producing ice cream and cheese, a strategic decision aimed at competing with major brands like Amul. This diversification marks an important move toward higher-value products that can boost revenue and strengthen brand presence.
The announcement was made during Gokul’s recent annual general meeting (AGM) by chairman Navid Mushrif. The new products are expected to launch in the coming months, just ahead of the summer season — a peak period for ice cream demand. This forward-looking step reflects a focus on capturing market opportunities and broadening the cooperative’s presence in a competitive sector, while also responding to changing consumer preferences.
Gokul’s turnover for the financial year ending in March 2025 reached Rs 3,966 crore, a notable increase compared to the previous year. This strong financial performance provides a solid foundation for investment in new ventures, reinforcing the cooperative’s position as a key player in the regional dairy economy.
The AGM also brought debate over a proposal to expand the number of directors fr om 21 to 25. BJP leader and director Shoumika Mahadik opposed the idea, raising concerns about the potential financial burden on the federation. The discussion illustrates the political and financial complexities that often accompany the management of large cooperatives, wh ere governance decisions are closely scrutinized.
Gokul’s expansion into ice cream and cheese highlights how cooperatives can leverage their scale and strong farmer networks to move up the value chain.
