Dairy Farming in Germany Declines Faster Than the EU Average

The dairy cow population in Germany decreased by 2.8% to 3.67 million head from June 2023 to June 2024, which is 0.5 percentage points faster than the EU average, according to data from the European Union's Statistical Office (Eurostat), reported by Agrarheute on October 10.
In the 13 EU countries where the census was conducted, the dairy cow population declined by 2.3% to 17.80 million head. These countries account for 89% of the EU's dairy herd.
Italy leads the EU in dairy herd reduction, with a decrease of 5.7%, bringing its population to approximately 1.7 million cows. France, the EU's second-largest milk producer after Germany, reduced its dairy herd by 2.0% to 3.1 million head.
In Ireland, although the population has been growing steadily since 2010, the number of cows has decreased by 1.4% to 1.62 million.
Poland's reduction rate was 0.1%, with its dairy herd standing at 2.19 million cows. In the Netherlands, the dairy cow population fell by 2.0% to 1.545 million head. Of the 13 surveyed countries, only Romania reported an increase, with a 0.2% rise to 1.09 million cows.
