Dairy Calf Birth Registrations in Ireland Fall Significantly

In a notable trend impacting Ireland's dairy sector, the number of dairy calves registered by February 21, 2025, has shown a marked decrease compared to the same period in 2024. According to data fr om the Irish Cattle Breeding Federation (ICBF), registrations have fallen by over 26,000 heads year-on-year, from 467,083 in 2024 to 440,735 in 2025.
This drop is also reflected in weekly comparisons, wh ere the same week last year recorded 8,200 more calf registrations. Industry experts are examining the potential causes, with some attributing part of the decline to genotyping delays. The ICBF reported receiving close to 78,000 DNA samples last week, a record figure though contributing to extended processing times.
These developments could have wider implications for the dairy industry in Ireland, which relies heavily on the continuous supply of calves for future dairy production. As stakeholders analyze the effects and implications of these figures, the focus will be on addressing any bottlenecks and ensuring the sustainability and growth of the sector.
