Consumer Confusion Over Dairy Product Labels in Brazil

A study conducted on the perception of dairy product labels in Brazil highlights significant confusion among consumers regarding labeling terms such as 'whey' and 'whey protein'. The research indicates that while many consumers believe flavor is the primary differentiator between products like chocolate milk and chocolate-flavored dairy beverages, the actual differentiator is the presence of whey, which many fail to recognize.

The study found generational differences in perception, with 34% of Baby Boomers citing flavor as the main differentiator compared to only 20% of Generation Z. Despite the younger generations associating whey with higher nutritional value due to new labeling regulations, the term is still less recognized as a key differentiator. This lack of understanding is exacerbated by the fact that 'whey' and 'whey protein' are often treated as synonymous by consumers, although the latter is associated with greater nutritional and market value.

The willingness to pay for products also varies significantly based on labeling. Consumers showed a strong preference for products labeled with 'whey' over those labeled with 'soro de leite', despite both terms referring to the same ingredient. The study highlighted a 100% difference in willingness to pay between these labels, which suggests that 'whey' is perceived as more valuable despite having the same nutritional content.

The popularity of protein-related searches on Google in Brazil has increased, with 'bebida proteica' searches rising by 1,550% between 2017 and 2026. Similarly, searches for 'whey protein' and 'whey' increased by 1,000% and 650%, respectively. This trend is reflected in the market, as Danone's YoPRO brand has quickly gained a leading position in the dairy beverage sector, surpassing traditional brands like Toddynho and Nescau. The success is attributed to its marketing focus on high protein content and physical performance.

Generation Z is noted for its willingness to pay a premium for attributes like healthiness, sustainability, and high protein content, viewing these as status symbols. Among this group, average consumption of chocolate-flavored dairy beverages is about 35 grams per capita daily, with whey accounting for up to 90% of the content, translating to an estimated 30 grams per capita daily intake of whey.

The study underscores the communication challenge faced by the dairy industry: educating consumers about product composition without relying on terms that disproportionately inflate or deflate perceived value. The market is expanding faster than consumer understanding, necessitating clearer education on product differences beyond taste, price, and labels.
