Concerns Rise Over Mega Dairy Farm Near Red River

Manitoba advocacy groups and politicians are alarmed after the approval of a second mega dairy farm, housing 25,000 cows, within 1.5 miles of the Red River in North Dakota. The farm's large-scale waste production is expected to severely impact the Red River and Lake Winnipeg due to potential nutrient runoff.

The farm's waste will be contained in a lagoon equivalent in size to 52 Canadian football fields. Experts warn that the inevitable overflow of manure slurry will lead to nutrient pollution in the river and lake, encouraging the growth of harmful blue-green algae. James Beddome of Manitoba Eco Network emphasizes the threat to Lake Winnipeg, highlighting its current vulnerable status.

Nutrient-rich waste, containing phosphorous and nitrogen, fosters the toxic algae that can endanger wildlife, pets, and humans. Kaitlyn Mitchell from Animal Justice expressed concerns about further pollution aggravating existing environmental stressors.

Environment and Climate Change Minister Mike Moyes referred the issue to the international joint commission, emphasizing the transboundary nature of water pollution and the need for cooperation with U.S. authorities. Efforts are underway to mitigate the environmental impact on Lake Winnipeg.

Kaitlyn Mitchell stresses the importance of a proactive approach from politicians in safeguarding Lake Winnipeg, signaling a collaborative effort across jurisdictions to preserve this critical water body.
