Uruguayan dairy producers are seeking industry support as Claldy announces the layoff of 50 employees. The restructuring aims at the cooperative's long-term viability.
Concerns Mount for Uruguayan Dairy Cooperative Claldy
The Uruguayan dairy sector is experiencing significant uncertainty, especially in the Paysandú region, where dairy producers have raised concerns over Claldy's future following the announcement of 50 job cuts. This move, aimed at ensuring the company’s viability, has rekindled memories of the 2019 PILI industry shutdown, which left many producers in debt.

Representatives from the Paysandú Milk Producers Association met with Claldy executives in a tense but necessary meeting to clarify the company’s status. Industry spokesperson Daniel Reimer assured stakeholders of a future plan requiring a "painful but necessary" company restructure to boost productivity and efficiency. Reimer highlighted plans for modernizing outdated machinery and denied that layoffs were funded by public money, instead confirming investments were being made into new technology. The crisis underscores the delicate interconnections within the dairy value chain, jeopardizing both workers and milk suppliers.

Producers urged government intervention to secure Claldy's regional strategic importance. The ongoing discussions mark a critical step towards finding collaborative solutions for safeguarding the industry and those dependent on it.
