Cofepris Issues Health Alert Over Fake Similac Baby Formula Sales

The Comisión Federal para la Protección contra Riesgos Sanitarios (Cofepris) issued a health alert after discovering counterfeit batches of Similac infant formulas being sold through social media and digital platforms. The affected products include Similac Total Comfort Stage 1 and Similac Isomil 1, with batch numbers such as 444242QUO1, 37055NNR, and 00274TVE that are not recognized by the official manufacturer, Abbott Laboratories of Mexico.

These counterfeit products have expiration dates ranging fr om October 2025 to July 2026, increasing the risk of unsafe products reaching unsuspecting consumers. Cofepris has warned that these products do not meet current regulations and cannot guarantee their composition or safe storage conditions, which could severely affect the nutrition and health of infants consuming them.

Similar cases of counterfeit infant formulas have been reported in other markets, wh ere imitation products use packaging and labels from well-known brands but contain low-quality or dangerous ingredients. This can lead to malnutrition or more serious health issues in vulnerable infants.

In response, Cofepris has recommended that consumers refrain from purchasing these products, particularly through online marketplaces, social media, and informal markets. The public is also encouraged to report any sales of counterfeit products and monitor infants for any adverse symptoms, ensuring that formulas are prepared according to the hygienic instructions on the original packaging.
