China’s Mega Dairy Milks 8,500 Organic Cows Indoors
A large dairy complex in the Ulan Buh Desert of Inner Mongolia keeps about 8,500 lactating cows inside climate-controlled free-stall buildings. The operation belongs to an enterprise with roughly 100,000 cattle spread across 33 connected hubs. Its production model uses zero grazing, substantial fixed infrastructure and mechanical control of barn conditions.
Milking takes place on large rotary platforms during three sessions each day. Average annual output is about 11,000 litres per cow. The ration includes organic corn silage, alfalfa hay and formulated grain concentrates, while pivot-irrigated farms in the surrounding area grow green forage on reclaimed desert land.
The local crop system supplies feed for the herd and reduces exposure to changes in spot-market feed availability. Water for cultivation is drawn from regional river basins. The dairy also relies on deep wells for its broader operations, including the distribution of water around the site.
Organic certification requires separation and disease-control measures throughout the production system. Vehicles pass through disinfection arches, staff undergo quarantine cycles, and perimeter controls restrict access to the barns. The herd-health programme excludes synthetic hormones and commercial antibiotic growth promoters. Associated cropland cannot use synthetic fertilisers, requiring mechanical weed control and biological treatment of waste.
The operation’s production costs are above standard international dairy-processing benchmarks. Mechanised silage harvesting, deep-well water systems and evaporative mist cooling during the summer add to expenses. The business serves domestic demand for premium organic liquid milk, toddler products and high-protein dairy goods, while changes in consumer demand and higher feed costs affect its margins.
Indoor mega-dairies of this kind have reduced the enterprise’s reliance on finished imported dairy products, according to the source report. Their operating requirements include automated milking equipment, intensive housing and farming methods adapted to arid conditions. The system also involves monitoring groundwater use, international grain prices and the retail position of organic products.
