China's Cheese and Cream Imports Soar in 2026

China's dairy import landscape in the first half of 2026 experienced a significant shift, with overall imports growing by a modest 0.7%. This marks a slowdown from the 5.7% increase observed in the same period of 2025. Despite the overall stabilization, imports of cheese and cream saw remarkable growth, influenced by the rising popularity of baked goods and tea-based beverages.

Cheese imports reached over 121,000 tonnes, marking a 24.8% increase. Fresh cheeses led this growth, contributing almost half of the total import volume and increasing by 26.5%. New Zealand was the primary supplier, followed by Australia and the European Union, with Italy exporting around 4,500 tonnes.

Cream imports amounted to 152,000 tonnes, reflecting an 8.4% rise. A notable increase of 25.4% was recorded in June alone. New Zealand played a dominant role as the leading supplier, exporting over 106,000 tonnes to China, catering to both the gastronomic and industrial sectors.

Conversely, imports of skimmed milk powder (SMP) declined due to rising international prices, making domestic production more competitive. Although whey and whole milk powder (WMP) remained major import categories by volume, they lost momentum compared to local production.

According to the consultancy CLAL, the data from the first half of 2026 indicates China's strategic transition in its import profile. While demand for basic commodities stabilizes due to strengthened domestic supply, the country solidifies its position as a key market for gourmet and functional dairy products, driven by an increasing adoption of Western-style diets.
