Amid escalating tariff measures from Washington, China has expressed its intent to deepen cooperation with Kazakhstan and strengthen strategic coordination to uphold the principles of multilateral trade. Chinese Ambassador to Kazakhstan Han Chunlin stated that, as members of the World Trade Organization, both countries should "join forces to defend the international system based on the UN’s role and uphold WTO principles."

The statement came during China’s central meeting on relations with neighboring countries, held in Beijing on April 8–9 under the chairmanship of President Xi Jinping. Xi emphasized that fostering good neighborly relations is a key priority for national security and building a shared future.
According to Han, China’s firm countermeasures in response to U.S. actions are aimed at safeguarding the country's sovereignty, security, and development interests. He underscored the importance of unity and avoiding tariff escalation between neighboring states:
“We must adhere to the principles of friendly consultation, non-discrimination, openness, and inclusiveness, and refrain from the ‘digging a hole for your neighbor’ approach of raising tariffs against each other,” the ambassador said.
Han highlighted that China and Kazakhstan enjoy a high level of enduring comprehensive strategic partnership. In 2024, bilateral trade reached $43.82 billion, up 6.8% from the previous year.
Given current global dynamics, China called on Kazakhstan to strengthen coordination on international platforms such as the SCO, BRICS, and the WTO in order to mount a collective response to trade-related challenges.
Additionally, Han reaffirmed China’s commitment to facilitating trade and investment procedures, improving the business environment, and jointly exploring new economic opportunities.
