Chilean Dairy Producers Explore New Export Opportunities in China

In a strategic move to broaden export horizons, a group of Chilean dairy industry representatives embarked on a mission to China in January. This initiative, spearheaded by Fedeleche and ProChile, has set its sights on cementing Chile's position within the burgeoning Chinese dairy market.

The delegation, which included three companies from the Los Lagos Region, aimed to capitalize on China's increasing demand for dairy products. Current projections indicate a significant upsurge in consumption, making it a lucrative market for Chilean producers.

The mission saw participants engaging with Chinese counterparts across the dairy chain, gaining insights into market trends, and exploring niche opportunities. The delegation visited Shanghai and Beijing, cities that are pivotal to understanding the Chinese consumer landscape.

ChileMilk, a sectoral brand backed by Fedeleche and ProChile, plays a pivotal role in showcasing the premium quality and distinct attributes of Chilean dairy products. According to Marcos Winkler, President of Fedeleche, the mission underscored the global competitiveness of Chilean dairy exports.

Notably, Chinese dairy demand is expected to surge from 42 liters per person annually to an estimated 118 liters over the next decade. The type of dairy products consumed is also evolving, with a shift towards specialized milks enriched with proteins and vitamins.

Rodrigo Isarn, General Manager of Lácteos y Energía, highlighted the importance of understanding consumer habits and adapting Chilean offerings to meet these demands. The growing Westernization of Chinese dietary preferences further enhances this potential.

ProChile has been instrumental in facilitating these export missions. As Ricardo Arriagada, Regional Director of ProChile, points out, their efforts are crucial in opening doors for Chilean dairy in this international market.
