Chile Launches Guide to Reduce Unnecessary Dairy Antibiotic Use
The Consorcio Lechero has introduced a sector-specific manual in Chile covering the use of antibiotics in dairy production. Its stated focus is the reduction of unnecessary use of these medicines.
The guide deals with antimicrobial resistance, as well as the diagnosis of conditions requiring treatment. It also sets out material on treatments for the dairy sector.
Antimicrobial resistance is included among the subjects addressed by the document. The guide therefore brings together resistance, diagnostic decisions and treatment practices within a single resource for dairy operations.
Alejandra Viedma stressed that medicines must be administered under veterinary prescription. Her statement placed veterinary oversight at the centre of the guidance on antibiotic use.
Viedma also said that the instructions must be followed correctly at each establishment. The guidance consequently addresses both the authorisation of medication and compliance with directions at individual dairy facilities.
The manual was presented by the Consorcio Lechero for the dairy sector. The available account does not provide details of its publication date, distribution arrangements, specific medicines, or treatment protocols beyond its coverage of antimicrobial resistance, diagnosis and treatments.
