Celema Creates a Differentiated A2 Milk Chain in Colombia

Celema is developing a differentiated chain for A2 milk in Colombia. The company works with 11 farms that have genotyped herds, linking milk production to the genetic identification of the animals supplying the product.

The model begins at the farm level. The participating producers operate herds for which genetic information has been established, allowing the milk identified as A2 to enter a separate handling process.

Celema maintains the A2 milk apart from other milk from the moment of milking. This separation continues through the stages preceding packaging and is maintained until the product is enclosed for sale.

The company’s approach covers the movement of the milk through the chain rather than only its production at the farm. Separation is therefore applied at successive points, from the initial collection after milking to the final packaging stage.

The stated purpose of the model is to transfer to the market the investments made by producers. Those investments concern three areas: genetics, quality and sustainability.

Genetic work is represented by the genotyped herds at the 11 participating farms. Quality and sustainability are also identified as part of the producer investment that Celema seeks to reflect in the market through the differentiated handling of A2 milk.

The company’s programme consequently combines identified cattle, separate handling and packaging with the aim of preserving the value associated with the production system. The initiative is being developed in Colombia.
