Canada Unveils $6.5 Billion Aid Package Amidst Trade Tensions with U.S.
The federal government of Canada is taking decisive action to support its economy in the face of mounting trade tensions with the United States. In response to potential U.S. tariffs on Canadian lumber and dairy, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's administration has unveiled a comprehensive $6.5-billion aid package. This initiative includes substantial financial assistance over the next two years to help Canadian businesses mitigate the impact of reduced sales to the U.S. and explore new global markets. Additionally, the government is introducing $500 million in business loans and another $1 billion specifically for the agricultural sector, both at favorable interest rates.
Furthermore, temporary modifications will be made to the employment insurance program to support businesses in retaining their workforce by allowing for reduced work hours. Employment Minister Steven MacKinnon emphasized the program's flexibility in compensating employees for lost wages during these challenging times.
Amidst these tensions, there has been political pressure on the government to expand the employment insurance program for broader coverage. However, the government remains committed to adapting its response depending on the evolving situation with the U.S.
This strategic approach also includes paused retaliatory tariffs as Canada seeks to maintain trade relations under the Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA), especially with recent concessions from U.S. President Donald Trump.
