Canada Opens Market for New Zealand Dairy After Trade Dispute

Canada has recently consented to allow access for New Zealand dairy products, following a prolonged trade disagreement, Trade Minister Todd McClay confirmed. Despite being in violation of the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP), Canadian markets had previously restricted dairy imports from New Zealand.

On Friday morning, McClay announced the resolution of the dispute, stating that Canada has agreed to amend its dairy quotas. This adjustment is projected to benefit New Zealand dairy exporters by up to $157 million. The changes underscore the importance of dairy exports to New Zealand's economy, providing a significant economic uplift in light of prior market access challenges.
