California Dairies Make Progress in Cutting Emissions
California dairy farmers are leading the charge in reducing methane emissions, expecting to meet state targets ahead of schedule. Methane digesters have been crucial, yet farmers are also using other sustainable practices to improve both environmental and economic sustainability. According to Frank Mitloehner from UC Davis, the state's incentive-based approach could achieve a 40% reduction in dairy methane emissions by 2030 without direct regulation.

California has cut nearly 5 million metric tons of CO2 via herd attrition and manure management, aiming for a total reduction of 7.61 to 10.59 million metric tons by 2030. Darrin Monteiro from California Dairies Inc. highlights the need for investment to support these efforts. Innovations include solar panels, feed additives, and breed improvements, with genomic testing poised to enhance cattle efficiency.

While challenges remain, particularly for smaller farms, technologies like vermiculture and Bovaer feed additives offer alternative solutions. As the industry adapts, the emphasis remains on efficiency and sustainable practices for future resilience.
