Calderdale Council Revisits Catering Policy to Support Local Farmers

Calderdale Council, known for its plant-based catering policy implemented two years ago, is reconsidering its stance in light of broader support for local businesses and supply chains. This review could see meat and dairy products reintroduced into council-catered events, aligning with its economic strategy to bolster local markets.

The Governance and Business Committee has recommended that the full council adopt the new policy, which aims to enhance the catering approach to support Calderdale residents, including local farmers and suppliers. Debs Harkins, the council’s Director of Public Health, highlighted that the revised policy strengthens local food systems by prioritizing seasonal and healthy food options. Plant-based choices will remain available, but the policy will now also emphasize supporting local suppliers over larger businesses.

While discussing the policy, councillors showed varied opinions regarding the popularity and cost-effectiveness of the plant-based approach. Councillor Scott Patient, who initially presented the plant-based policy, noted the potential increased expenses associated with the new policy. In contrast, Councillor Stephen Padgett raised concerns about food waste at events, questioning the demand for plant-based leftovers.

Despite differing views, Ms. Harkins assured that waste management could be integrated into the policy framework. Councillors agreed that cost monitoring should be part of the policy if it gains full council approval.

This policy review is part of Calderdale’s broader economic and food strategies, which aspire to make the region a thriving place for business while ensuring sustainable food for all residents. The emphasis remains on using local and sustainable resources, reinforcing the council’s commitment to environmental and economic sustainability.
