Brownes Dairy, based in Australia, has commenced its sale process approved by Mengniu Dairy. The company, involved in both dairy products and coffee-based drinks, aims to find a buyer who can support its future expansion.

Brownes Dairy, an established dairy and coffee-drinks business in Australia, has initiated its sale process with backing from its investor, Mengniu Dairy. McGrathNicol Restructuring was appointed as the receiver for the shares of Australian Zhiran Co. Pty Ltd, Brownes Dairy's holding company, after the latter defaulted on a sizable loan. This decision by Mengniu now allows the search for a new owner to proceed.

Mengniu Dairy, listed in Hong Kong, moved to take control due to the financial issues stemming from a loan, which Australian Zhiran Co. failed to repay. The company's journey under its current ownership began in 2017 after being purchased from Archer Capital by a consortium, including investment firm Changchun Lianxin Investment Consulting. Mengniu played a key financial role in the purchase through a loan arrangement.

Founded in 1886, Brownes Dairy holds the distinction of being the oldest dairy firm in Western Australia. Its product line, including yogurt, cheese, and ready-to-drink coffee products like the ‘Hunt and Brew’ brand, enjoys distribution through major Australian retailers. The company launched 'Hunt and Brew' in the UK in 2024 and continues to expand its presence with the recent acquisition of a local co-packer called Indul.

Rob Kirman, a partner at McGrathNicol, expressed optimism about Brownes Dairy's prospects, highlighting the global interest in durable consumer assets. The company's scale and international presence make it attractive to potential buyers. Despite ongoing efforts, Brownes Dairy's CEO, Natalie Sarich-Dayton, emphasized the confidentiality of discussions with prospective buyers but assured that the company is aiming for an efficient sale process.

While specifics on suitors remain undisclosed, the company articulated hope for a transaction that supports long-term strategic goals. The process marks a new chapter for Brownes Dairy as it seeks a custodian to facilitate its subsequent phases of commercial and geographic expansion.
