Brazil's Dairy Sector Seeks Global Expansion Amid Domestic Challenges

The Brazilian dairy sector is actively exploring ways to expand its export potential to bring domestic milk prices closer to international levels. This move is seen as a strategy to reduce volatility faced by local producers and enhance the sector's competitiveness against imported products. Currently, domestic milk consumption in Brazil stands at approximately 180 liters per capita annually, with potential growth to 220 liters.

Industry leaders have emphasized the importance of improving sanitary standards, particularly in controlling diseases like brucellosis and tuberculosis, which are crucial for boosting production competitiveness. Additionally, there is a push to suspend fiscal incentives for milk imports in Santa Catarina to safeguard local producers from what is perceived as unfair competition.

The discussions also highlighted opportunities for adding value to dairy products. A proposed strategy involves economically leveraging whey for the production of higher-value dairy proteins such as whey protein. This initiative may be supported by a feasibility study conducted with the assistance of the BRDE, focusing on investment opportunities, governance models, and financing alternatives.

Other topics on the agenda included updating anti-dumping measures related to imported milk powder and introducing a futures market tool for dairy products developed by StoneX Leite Brasil, in conjunction with the CNA and Cepea. These measures aim to innovate and strengthen the competitiveness of the dairy supply chain.

Overall, these proposals underscore a strategy of integration among government bodies, industry entities, and producers to enhance the competitiveness of the dairy sector and increase its international market presence.
