BHU Team Receives Patent for Milk-Protein Antacid Tablet

Banaras Hindu University’s research team has been granted Indian patent No. 597350 for a composite antacid tablet containing milk protein and aloe vera. The application was submitted under No. 202311057324 to the Patent Office of the Government of India.

The work was carried out in the Department of Dairy Science and Food Technology at BHU’s Institute of Agricultural Sciences. The formulation combines a dairy-derived protein with a plant-based ingredient in a tablet intended for applications related to acidity and digestive discomfort.

Dinesh Chandra Rai led the research. Rai is a senior professor at BHU and is serving as vice-chancellor of Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar Bihar University. The other inventors named in the patent are Raj Kumar Duary, Arvind, Ruchi Chawla, Ridhi Pandey and Krishna Kumar.

The research concerns the use of milk components and aloe vera in a product outside conventional dairy consumption. The work places the formulation within dairy science, food technology and research into naturally derived ingredients. It also relates to dairy value addition, which involves developing additional uses for milk and milk-based components.

Rai said the patent reflects the movement of research from the dairy sector and laboratory work towards products intended for everyday applications. He also referred to the formulation in connection with natural digestive wellness and innovation based on dairy ingredients.

The patented technology has not been presented in the source as a commercially available product. Further clinical validation, scale-up and commercial development would be needed to assess its performance, safety and suitability for wider consumer use. Rai said the patent could support subsequent clinical studies and commercial work.

The patent has drawn congratulations from academics, alumni and other associates of the universities. Those named as well-wishers include BS Rai, Kanupriya, Rajeev Kumar, Navedul Haque, Shartendu Shekhar and Navin Kumar.
