Bebop Expands Dairy-Free Ice Cream Across Asia-Pacific

Bebop, a new dairy-free ice cream brand developed by GTE Foods, is making its debut in the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region. This plant-based ice cream uses a blend of ingredients such as cashew, coconut, almond, oats, soy, and rice to recreate the familiar creaminess of conventional ice cream. Bebop was designed to address consumer concerns about the high calorie content and indulgence traditionally associated with ice cream.

David Pan, co-founder of GTE Foods, stated that Bebop is targeted at consumers who love ice cream but are conscious about calorie intake and health. He emphasized that Bebop allows people to enjoy ice cream without the associated guilt, focusing on health without compromising taste. Pan remarked, "Bebop is ice cream reimagined. It’s not just sweet; there are layers of flavours that come out over time."

The brand is initially being introduced to markets in Taiwan, Singapore, Japan, Hong Kong, Korea, and Australia, with Singapore and Japan as primary targets due to their proximity and interest in health-conscious and premium products. A single 3.5-ounce serving of Bebop is priced at approximately US$3.76 in Taiwan, and it boasts half the calories of traditional ice cream, aligning with the trend towards health-oriented indulgence.

Bebop's Japanese market is seen as particularly promising because of local consumers' appreciation for high-quality and well-crafted products. David Pan noted that although there is an existing market for similar dairy-free offerings, Bebop’s advantage comes from its modern production facility, which affords better quality control and scalability in comparison to smaller, artisanal competitors.

While China is still under consideration as a potential market, Pan highlighted that success there would require a combination of health, taste, and quality. Bebop's current product lineup in Taiwan includes various flavors such as Cookies & Coconut Cream and Banana Caramel Cookies, with distribution through supermarkets and specialty stores. The brand also caters to the foodservice sector with larger product formats that complement desserts.
