The number of dairy herds affected by avian flu in the United States has surpassed 100 across 12 states, with new cases reported in Iowa and an increase in affected herds in Colorado.
Iowa's latest report came from a dairy herd in Sioux County on Saturday, while Colorado saw an addition of six herds last week, bringing the state's total to seven quarantined herds.
Despite the rising cases of avian flu in dairy herds, the safety of the U.S. milk supply remains intact, as affirmed by Gregg Doud, President and CEO of the National Milk Producers Federation. In a recent Agri-Pulse Open Mic interview, Doud emphasized the effectiveness of pasteurization in ensuring milk safety. "The tests have been run, and the analysis shows that pasteurization, a practice over a century old, effectively addresses any concerns regarding milk safety for U.S. consumers," stated Doud.
