Australian Retirement Trust raises Bega Cheese stake to 6.056%

Australian Retirement Trust (ART), one of Australia’s largest superannuation funds, raised its substantial shareholding in Bega Cheese Limited through transactions recorded in Form 604 disclosures. The fund, which manages more than $300 billion in members’ retirement savings, made the purchases through HSBC Custody Nominees (Australia) Limited.

The latest filing puts ART’s voting power at 6.056%, compared with 5.008% previously. The fund’s accumulated position comprises 18,519,382 ordinary shares. ART first registered a substantial holding in Bega in early 2025.

Bega’s processing and branded-food operations

Bega Cheese operates dairy-processing and cold-chain facilities in New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, South Australia and Western Australia. The company processes hundreds of millions of litres of raw milk each year and produces branded products including Dare iced coffee, Big M, Farmers Union, Pura, Daily Juice and cheese.

The group expanded its manufacturing and consumer-food portfolio through acquisitions including Lion Dairy & Drinks and products such as Vegemite. Its operations include warehousing, packaging and milk-processing assets serving both the retail and food markets.

Competition in Australian dairy

Australian dairy processors compete for milk supplies and retail distribution alongside Lactalis, Saputo Dairy Australia, Fonterra and regional manufacturers. Domestic milk production has been reported at about 8.0bn to 8.3bn litres a year, while supermarket shelves include both private-label milk and branded dairy beverages.

Bega’s portfolio includes products sold in the chilled-beverage and branded-food categories. The company’s activities therefore span consumer products as well as dairy ingredients, including milk powder and butterfat markets whose returns vary over time.

Institutional ownership

The shareholding increase adds to the company’s register of institutional investors, which also includes First Sentier Group, according to the source. Bega has focused in recent financial periods on working capital, debt reduction and changes to its product portfolio following spending linked to brand integration.

The disclosure does not state the price paid for the additional shares or identify a specific investment timetable beyond the filing and ART’s earlier substantial-holding notice.
