Arla employs heat pumps in dairy plant to cut emissions
Arla Foods, the European dairy cooperative, is making significant strides in its environmental commitments. The cooperative has begun utilizing an electric high-temperature heat pump at its AKAFA powdered milk plant in Svenstrup, Denmark. This initiative replaces natural gas in drying processes and aligns with Arla's broader goal to achieve complete decarbonization of its supply chain. Traditionally, spray drying, a process essential for turning liquid milk into powder, is challenging to electrify due to the high temperatures required.

However, Arla's innovative heat pump uses CO₂ as a thermal fluid, achieving these temperatures efficiently. The expected annual CO₂ reduction exceeds 1,500 tonnes. Line Brandt Pedersen, Arla's supply chain sustainability director, dubbed this installation a "milestone" and indicated plans to replicate it across other plants if successful. This venture is just one part of Arla's broader strategy to cut its Scope 1 + 2 emissions by 63% by 2030 from 2015 levels. So far, emissions have decreased by 37%, bolstered by investments in energy efficiency and clean technologies.
