Argentina’s Chocotorta Reaches Second Place in Global Ranking

Argentina’s chocotorta took second place in a ranking published by TasteAtlas. Sweden’s kladdkaka came first, while Italy’s torta caprese ranked third. The three desserts use different methods and ingredients, but all were included in the platform’s classification of foods from around the world.

The chocotorta is assembled without baking. Its main components are chocolate biscuits, dulce de leche and cream cheese. The biscuits may be softened with coffee, milk, chocolate milk or another liquid before being arranged in alternating layers with the dairy mixture. Chilling gives the finished dessert its structure.

Two dairy products form the filling

The cream is made by combining dulce de leche and cream cheese, usually in broadly similar proportions. Dulce de leche supplies the dominant sweet flavour, while cream cheese reduces its intensity and changes the consistency of the mixture. Together, the products bind the biscuit layers and provide the dessert’s moisture and texture.

For Argentina’s dairy industry, the recipe illustrates how two products with different characteristics can be used together in a nationally recognised preparation. Dulce de leche is consumed on its own and also appears in alfajores, ice cream, chocolate, pastries, baked goods and other desserts. In the chocotorta, it is one of the recipe’s principal structural ingredients rather than a secondary filling.

The other desserts in the ranking

Kladdkaka, the Swedish dessert placed first, is a cake made with ingredients including chocolate or cocoa, eggs, butter, sugar and flour. It is known for a moist centre and a firmer surface and is associated in Sweden with fika, a customary coffee break accompanied by something sweet.

Torta caprese, which ranked third, comes from the Italian island of Capri. Its traditional recipe uses dark chocolate, eggs, sugar, almonds and butter. The absence of flour gives it a dense, moist texture.

A platform-based ranking

TasteAtlas’s classifications are based on ratings and the system used by the platform. They are not scientific assessments or official competitions, and their positions can change. The ranking nonetheless placed two Argentine dairy ingredients in an internationally visible dessert: dulce de leche and cream cheese.

The recipe also shows several stages of dairy transformation. Milk is first processed into dulce de leche or cream cheese, and those products are then incorporated into a prepared dessert. Fresh and spreadable cheeses therefore appear not only in traditional table or cooking categories, but also in confectionery and other forms of food service.
