In a landmark collaboration, the University of Fort Hare (UFH) and AngloGold Ashanti have inaugurated the AngloGold Ashanti Research Chair in Dairy Science & Technology at UFH’s Faculty of Science & Agriculture. This partnership, enabled by AngloGold Ashanti’s generous R12.5 million endowment, marks a significant investment in research within the Eastern Cape, representing the largest private sector contribution to research at an Eastern Cape University to date.

The initiative underscores UFH’s strategic trajectory towards enhancing dairy science capabilities, including plans for South Africa’s second veterinary school and a pioneering qualification in dairy science. The Chair aims to catalyze advancements in dairy technology and sustainability, fostering economic growth and supporting rural livelihoods across South Africa. Key stakeholders from academia, industry, and community leaders convened at the launch event, held at UFH's Alice Campus, reflecting broad support for the initiative.

"We celebrate the establishment of this Research Chair as a testament to our commitment to leveraging academic excellence for societal benefit," remarked Prof Sakhela Buhlungu, UFH Vice-Chancellor, highlighting the Chair’s potential to drive innovation and knowledge transfer in dairy science.

Dr Nthabi Taole-Mjimba, UFH Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Research, Partnerships and Innovation, emphasized the Chair’s role in bolstering UFH’s research capacity and contributing to sustainable development goals. She emphasized its alignment with national priorities and its potential to address challenges in agriculture and food security.

AngloGold Ashanti’s Senior Vice-President, Group Sustainability, Ambassador Baso Sangqu, affirmed the company’s dedication to education and agricultural legacy projects in South Africa. He underscored the Chair’s significance in advancing rural agriculture and supporting national development goals.

Industry leaders, including Mr. Fanie Ferreira from the Milk Producers Organization (MPO) and Simpiwe Somdyala from Amadlelo Agri, expressed optimism about the Chair’s impact on the dairy industry’s competitiveness and technological evolution. They pledged continued support for collaborative research and innovation efforts.

The event concluded with a tour of the Fort Hare Dairy Farm, emphasizing practical applications of research in dairy science. As UFH prepares to recruit for the Chair position, stakeholders anticipate tangible contributions towards regional development and socio-economic empowerment through dairy science and technology.
