Amul, the renowned Indian dairy cooperative, has officially introduced its popular milk products to the U.S. market. Announced through a recent advertisement, Amul's product range in the U.S. mirrors that available in India.
This international expansion is facilitated through a collaboration with the Michigan Milk Producers Association (MMPA), a 108-year-old cooperative. Under this partnership, MMPA will manage the collection and processing of milk, while the Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF), which represents Amul, will oversee marketing and branding efforts.

The initial launch will see Amul milk distributed in major cities such as New York, New Jersey, Chicago, Washington, Dallas, and Texas, with plans to extend coverage across the U.S. GCMMF's managing director, Jayen Mehta, revealed the cooperative's ambition to further penetrate international markets beyond the U.S. Amul's diverse product portfolio includes paneer, curd, flavored milk, ice creams, chocolates, and more, with exports reaching over 50 countries predominantly catering to the Indian diaspora.

In addition to its U.S. launch, Amul is innovating back home in India with the introduction of 'supermilk,' which boasts an impressive 35 grams of protein per glass. The cooperative is also venturing into the organic market, with imminent launches of organic spices and other products, including jaggery and sugar.

Furthermore, Amul continues to expand its high-protein product line in India, recently introducing fortified versions of lassi, milkshakes, buttermilk, and whey protein, each offering 15-20 grams of protein per serving. This development aligns with Amul's recent achievement of a record Rs 55,000 crore ($7.2 billion) turnover in FY23.

Highlighting its global branding initiatives, Amul has also announced sponsorship of the USA and South African cricket teams for the upcoming T20 World Cup, reinforcing its commitment to promoting healthy and nutritious products through sports.

Amul's journey began in 1946 in Anand, Gujarat, as a response to exploitative trade practices against local milk producers. With the guidance of Tribhuvandas Patel and support from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, and later under the leadership of Dr. Verghese Kurien, Amul became a symbol of India's dairy revolution, significantly enhancing milk production and establishing India as the world's top milk producer. The cooperative has been instrumental in pioneering dairy innovations and remains a central figure in India’s dairy industry.
