Amul Eyes Possible Takeover of Madhya Pradesh's Sanchi Dairy

Amul, India's leading dairy cooperative, is in discussions to potentially take over Sanchi Dairy, a brand deeply embedded in the homes of Madhya Pradesh, akin to Nandini in Karnataka. The BJP-led Madhya Pradesh government is contemplating adopting an Amul-like model for Sanchi, with a final decision expected post the Lok Sabha elections.
Sources from the Times of India (TOI) reveal that the Madhya Pradesh government believes this move will benefit the state’s dairy farmers. Gulshan Bamra, the principal secretary of the animal husbandry and dairy department, confirmed, "A decision on Amul’s role in MP for the benefit of milk-producing farmers will be decided by the government soon."
Since January, multiple discussions have occurred between the animal husbandry department and Amul. Reports suggest that Amul is interested in a complete takeover and merger with Sanchi, though the government remains cautious to avoid a political backlash similar to the Amul vs. Nandini controversy in Karnataka last year.
On January 10, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav attended a joint meeting in Ahmedabad to discuss milk procurement from MP producers, aiming to safeguard the interests of local dairy farmers. Furthermore, at the Ujjain Investors' Summit in March, the MP government sought to formalize a collaboration with Amul to promote Sanchi. Despite concerted efforts, the MoU did not materialize, as Amul was reportedly uninterested in mere collaboration without substantial incentives from the MP government.
