Amritsar Dairy Farmers Protest Against Synthetic Milk Market Impact

The agricultural hub of Amritsar is witnessing a severe crisis as local dairy farmers stage a dramatic protest against the synthetic milk trade. Farmers have been pouring hundreds of liters of fresh milk onto public roads, highlighting their frustration with the economic impact of synthetic dairy products on their livelihoods.

The protest, organized by groups like the Bharatiya Kisan Union (Ekta Sidhupur), comes in response to the widespread availability of adulterated milk products, including fake milk, paneer, and khoya. These products are sold at lower prices, leading to suppressed market rates for raw milk and squeezing the margins of genuine dairy producers.

Farmers argue that the cost of essential farm inputs like cattle feed and veterinary care has risen sharply, while the prices they receive for raw milk have stagnated. This has left many family-run dairies struggling to cover their operational costs, with some facing potential closure if the situation does not improve.

There is widespread dissatisfaction with the local health department's enforcement measures, which farmers claim have been ineffective in curbing the production and distribution of counterfeit dairy products. Despite inspections conducted after a similar protest in May, farmers report no significant improvement in the situation.
