Ahome Remains Free of Screw Worm Infestation Amid Regional Threat

The municipality of Ahome continues to be free from the screw worm infestation that has been detected in the southern region of Sinaloa, Mexico. The initial case of this biological threat was identified in the municipality of Rosario. According to local authorities, the presence of the pest is not due to negligence in sanitary monitoring but rather the result of the fly's movement from neighboring regions such as Nayarit, where the parasite is present.

In response to the threat of the infestation spreading to northern areas, the State Government, through the Directorate of Health and Sanitary Inspection (DISIS), coordinated with the National Service of Health, Safety and Agro-Food Quality (SENASICA) and the Livestock Committee. They have implemented strict controls over the movement of cattle from Rosario to other parts of the state.

Additionally, the livestock organization in Ahome has intensified training and guidance sessions for producers to enhance ongoing corral gate monitoring. Recommendations include preventive disinfection and immediate treatment of open wounds, as well as the care of the umbilical cord in newborn calves, which are critical points for the insect to lay its eggs.

Authorities are urging the livestock community to remain calm and avoid unfounded alarmism. The measures in place are designed to manage and reduce the risk of the pest spreading further.
