Africa is becoming the main destination for Uruguayan dairy exports, surpassing South America in early 2025.

Africa has rapidly taken the lead as the main destination for Uruguayan dairy exports, overtaking South America during the first months of 2025.
Uruguay exported $76.1 million worth of dairy products to Africa in contrast to $68.9 million to South America over the same period. The year prior, South America led with $372.6 million compared to Africa's $317.1 million. Africa, often cited as the continent of the future, is showing promise similar to Asia's economic rise in past decades.
Despite challenges like political instability and infrastructure issues, the potential of Africa's young workforce and urban growth represent significant opportunities for future economic development. Algeria remains a significant market, importing $60.1 million mainly in whole milk powder. Mauritania and Egypt, among others, also contribute to the rising numbers.
However, Uruguay's dairy exports to Nigeria are minimal despite its demand for dairy imports, mostly filled by the EU and New Zealand. There remains potential for growth in untapped markets within Africa, requiring strategic efforts to increase Uruguay's presence in these regions.
