Abbott launches five-HMO Similac 360 Total Care in America

Abbott announced the US commercial release of Similac 360 Total Care in a liquid format that is ready to feed. The company describes it as its most advanced infant formula to date. It is being introduced through pharmacy and self-service retail channels in the United States.

The formulation contains a proprietary blend of five human milk oligosaccharides, or HMOs. These bioactive compounds are found in human milk and are described in the product information as prebiotics. HMOs are the third-largest solid component of human milk after fats and carbohydrates.

According to the product description, the five-HMO combination is intended to support beneficial bacteria in the intestinal microbiome. Abbott says the formulation is designed to support the infant immune system and the digestive barrier, including its ability to withstand potential pathogens.

The product also contains lutein, natural vitamin E and docosahexaenoic acid, commonly known as DHA. Abbott presents these ingredients in balanced proportions intended to support early brain and visual development. The formula is positioned for situations in which exclusive breastfeeding is not possible or supplementation has been advised by health professionals.

The ready-to-feed presentation does not require prior mixing or the addition of water. The company says this removes the possibility of incorrect dilution during preparation and reduces the risk of contamination associated with mixing. It also provides a uniform delivery of nutrients and is intended for use in hospitals and at home.

The launch adds a liquid product containing five HMOs to Abbott’s Similac infant-nutrition range in the US. The announcement characterises the formula as incorporating bioactive ingredients aimed at immune, gastrointestinal, cognitive and sensory development during early childhood.
